My background
About Stephen Hanlon
I grew up on the Curragh in the heart of Kildare, the home of Irish horse racing. I first worked for Curragh trainer Frank Ennis on weekends and school holidays, before further spells with Martin Brassil and Dessie Hughes. Time spent with 17-time Irish Champion trainer Willie Mullins and leading Classic-winning trainer Ralph Beckett confirmed my ambition to become a racehorse trainer.
I have over 20 years’ experience in the racing industry, having worked across both Flat and National Hunt racing in Ireland and the UK. I was fortunate to be part of the Willie Mullins yard during the Hurricane Fly, Annie Power and Faugheen era, and to work alongside the late Dessie Hughes during his Cheltenham Festival successes with horses such as Our Conor and Guitar Pete.
During my formative years, I gained wide-ranging experience, from riding top-class horses to travelling runners at the highest level both at home and abroad. Working closely with world-class trainers and elite horses provided an invaluable education and a deep understanding of what is required to succeed at the top of the sport.
I have been privileged to learn from some of the best names in racing, and I now aim to put that experience to work in my own training career in the UK. Every horse in my care will be trained as an individual, with professionalism, attention to detail and a clear focus on maximising potential while delivering an enjoyable and rewarding experience for owners.
